ABOUT

ROOMS

Come and enjoy cutting-edge country hospitality at the Hankerd Inn, a thoroughly renovated and modernized historic farmhouse, circa 1885, between Jackson and Ann Arbor and close to each.

Amenities include 16 lovely bedrooms, each with its own private bath, in three unique buildings on four landscaped acres adjacent to a 27-hole golf course. Each room, decorated with period antiques, is named after and reflects the interests and occupations of the original family members.

One building is the original farmhouse, now a traditional B&B. The second is a private, new construction cottage. The third is a three-story "faux barn" with its own state-of-the-art kitchen, large rooms with twin beds and nothing but space on the lower level for larger events.

The spacious dining room accommodates 50.  The country style breakfasts are divine. Lunches, dinners, and reception fare are available at an additional cost by prior arrangement.

The inn is as perfect for individual stays as it is for retreats. Its 16,000+ square feet includes areas for quilting, scrapbooking and family reunions. Here, WiFi is free and readily available.

OUR ROOMS AND THEIR HISTORY

The story of the Inn goes back many, many years to the Hankerd Family who were immigrants from Ireland in 1835. Patrick the fourth son of Michael and Margaret married Sarah Ann Birney in 1872. Patrick had been a school teacher prior to his marriage; for years afterward, he farmed his land on the very spot on which the Inn and golf course are now.  He served as Henrietta Township clerk in 1869-1870 and as township supervisor from 1870-1886. He ran successfully for state representative in 1876 and was re-elected in 1883 and 1885. Patrick Hankerd's unsuccessful bid for that office in 1900 marked the end of his involvement in politics. He would remain active in several farmers' organizations.

Patrick and Sarah had eight children: Mary, Jane, Agnes, Charles, Helen, Vincent, Loretto, and Bernadette. Agnes died while still a young girl; the other children survived to adulthood. Mary, Loretto, and Bernadette became nuns and Vincent became a priest. Only Charles married; Helen and Jane taught school and worked in a number of towns in Michigan before moving back to live with their mother here in the farm house The Hankerd family also owned land around the shores of Pleasant Lake. They operated a summer hotel at the lake, rented boats, and leased land to visitors.

It is for this rich history of the farm house that the innkeeper has chosen to honor the family members by naming a room for each one of them and surrounding the Inn with family pictures and antiques given to her from the family, so that others could understand the family's settlement in this area of Michigan which was a predominant farming community.

GUEST REVIEW

"Great space for crafters of any kind even with a full house we have plenty of room for our supplies and room to work. If you're a card maker or scrapbooker you know trying to decide what to bring is hard as you don't want to have to leave with your project not finished. They really do a nice job with the meals. Have been there more than once."
